How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team: 

In support of the Toronto Ravine Strategy, the Ravine Youth Team is responsible for projects related to enhancing or improving the habitat and recreational value of Toronto’s ravines, including plantings, invasive species removal, trail restoration, litter clean-ups, as well as public engagement at local events.  

 

This unique summer contract is an opportunity to gain valuable early work experience, while exploring potential career options in the environmental sector and building skills through various professional development experiences.

 

Major Responsibilities:  

  • Performs activities associated with the Ravine Youth Team programs and adheres to principles outlined in Toronto’s Ravine Strategy.
  • Assists with ravine restoration activities including but not limited to invasive species removal, planting, and litter clean-ups.  
  • Supports preparation of materials and engages with community members at organized virtual or in-person events to educate them about the Toronto Ravine Strategy and activities taking place to improve their conditions.  
  • Assists with and occasionally performs field observations, data recording, data management and specimen collection. 
  • Conducts daily vehicle and equipment inspections, review of inventory control; reports any concerns to the Crew Lead 
  • Complies with health & safety policies, and other TRCA policies, as applicable in various work environments; ensures proper use of PPE in the field. 
  • Submits and reconciles appropriate documentation including vehicle sheets, expenses for proper tracking to ravine program activities. 
  • Participates in daily safety meetings including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning, including using tools and equipment safely teamwork environment. 

 

What will you need to succeed: 

Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses) 

  • Minimum pursuing post-secondary diploma, degree in a related field or lived experience and/or traditional Indigenous knowledge will be considered for this position.
  • Minimum pursuing post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field. 
  • Valid Ontario Class G2 driver's license. 

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies

  • Comfortable working in the outdoors, in frequently changing weather conditions and work sites.  
  • Comfortable working with hand tools, and other equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with tact and courtesy. 
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, related Regulations and legislation.
